Last week, our team attended the prestigious Esxence 2026, one of the world's leading showcases for artistic and niche perfumery. Over four inspiring days, we had the opportunity to meet with existing clients, connect with new partners, and explore conversations with potential collaborators from across the global fragrance industry.

Beyond the valuable business interactions, Esxence 2026 offered a fascinating insight into the future direction of perfumery. This year's exhibition highlighted an industry that is evolving beyond scent alone, embracing richer, more immersive sensory experiences that engage consumers on multiple levels.

Perfumery Beyond Fragrance

The defining theme of Esxence 2026 was the growing desire to create fragrances that transcend olfaction and become fully immersive experiences. Taste emerged as a particularly strong influence, reflected not only in the ingredients featured within many new launches but also in the visual storytelling and experiential displays presented throughout the exhibition.

Brands increasingly sought to evoke emotions, memories and lifestyles through carefully curated environments, demonstrating how fragrance can connect with multiple senses simultaneously.

The Rise of Culinary-Inspired Ingredients

One of the most noticeable trends was the continued evolution of gourmand perfumery. However, rather than traditional sweet accords, brands showcased a more sophisticated and contemporary interpretation of edible inspirations.

Ingredients such as rice, milk and mint appeared frequently, while more adventurous notes including sake, kombucha, matcha, yuzu and chrysanthemum brought fresh cultural perspectives to fragrance creation. These ingredients offered both novelty and authenticity, creating compositions that feel familiar yet intriguingly unexpected.

Vanilla remained a dominant force, appearing in numerous launches, often paired with fruity accords and textured gourmand notes to create fragrances that are both comforting and captivating.

Freshness Reimagined

Alongside the gourmand movement, a contrasting trend emerged: the rise of green, clean and consciously minimalist fragrances.

Linen accords, soft musks and herbaceous notes featured prominently throughout the exhibition, reflecting a growing consumer desire for simplicity, wellbeing and understated elegance. Rather than relying on complexity or intensity, these fragrances celebrated clarity, freshness and a refined sense of restraint.

This new interpretation of freshness feels particularly relevant in a market increasingly focused on mindfulness, sustainability and everyday wearability.

East Meets West: A Global Language of Fragrance

Esxence 2026 further confirmed that niche perfumery has become a truly global industry. While fragrance has become a universal language, the exhibition highlighted how different regions continue to express their olfactive identities in unique ways.

The Middle East continues to bring confidence, richness and exuberance to artistic perfumery, with bold creations that command attention and celebrate luxury.

In contrast, Japanese and wider Asian brands presented a more subtle and evocative approach. Their creations often focused on atmosphere, texture and storytelling, favouring quiet sophistication over overt intensity. This balance between expressive and restrained styles contributed significantly to the diversity and creativity on display throughout the show.

Packaging as an Extension of the Fragrance

Innovation was not limited to the fragrances themselves. Packaging played an increasingly important role in communicating brand identity and values.

Sustainability was a recurring theme, with many brands incorporating materials derived from natural waste streams and exploring environmentally conscious design solutions. Practicality also featured strongly, with everyday-friendly formats designed to fit modern lifestyles.

Perhaps most strikingly, bottle caps and closures have evolved into design statements in their own right. Many brands transformed these functional elements into miniature works of art, reinforcing the idea that every aspect of the fragrance experience contributes to the overall story.

Looking Ahead

Esxence 2026 demonstrated that niche perfumery is entering an exciting new chapter. The industry is embracing a more holistic approach, where fragrance is no longer experienced solely through scent but through a combination of taste, texture, visual design and emotional storytelling.

From minimalist freshness and innovative gourmand creations to culturally inspired ingredients and sustainable design, the trends showcased this year point towards a future where perfumery becomes increasingly immersive, personal and multi-sensory. We also saw brands connecting with consumers visually through emotions and memories, creating immersive brand environments designed to fully surround the consumer in a brand’s world, engaging multiple senses beyond just smell.

For us, the event was not only an opportunity to strengthen relationships with existing clients and establish new connections, but also a valuable window into the innovations shaping the future of fragrance. We return inspired by the creativity on display and excited about the opportunities these emerging trends will bring to the industry in the years ahead.
